Vivian Maier – The selfie queen?

The Finnish Museum of Photography just opened Vivian Maier exhibition last week. I visited the exhibition yesterday. The exhibition concentrated on Vivian Maiers selfies. The name of the exhibition was The Self-Portrait and its double.

The exhibition consisted of 83 photographs and cine films from the period 1953 to 1986.

The whole collection of 120.000 negatives were found from a storage house in 2007. Maier herself lived in total privacy. She was a nanny and photography was her hobby. It was a sensation when the negatives were found. Her story can be read from the website that was made to honor her work. It is a fascinating story and worth reading.

When Vivian Maier was photographing selfies it was not a big thing like it is now. Most of the photos exhibited were reflections from mirrors and other reflective objects. One of my favorite images was the reflection from a wheel capsule of a Beetle.

A collection of her self-portraits can be seen on the already mentioned website.

Taking selfies is an interesting genre of photography. It has a long also in painting. The first known selfie was taken by Robert Cornelius in 1829. It was a daguerrotype. Another early selfie was by Hippolyte Bayard. The photograph is known as Self Portrait as a Drowned Man.

It was a reaction to the injustice he felt. Hippolyte Bayard had a photo exhibition 24th of June 1839. It was the worlds first photo exhibition. Bayard also claimed that he had invented photography before Lois Daguerre and William Henry Fox Talbot. The invention was credited to the two and Hippolyte Bayard was totally ignored at the time. Very understandable that he felt miss treated.

It would interesting to hear what Vivian Maier would say if she knew how famous her photographs are? As the story of her life says she was very private. Maybe she would not have liked the fame?

Most likely she enjoyed the process of making photographs more than showing them to others. Was she just too modest and did not realise how gifted she was as a photographer. Was she a victim of her time when women did not had nearly as good opportunities that they have today at least in the western world? We will never know.

Photokina 2018 – What was it for m4/3

Photokina 2018 is over and the next one is already next May. I made a video about my thoughts. I mostly concentrate on the lenses that was new for m4/3. Enjoy the video!

  • Photokina 2018 – What to Expect? – Exhibitions

Photokina 2018 – What to Expect? – Exhibitions

Photokina is a lot more than just the gear. Its also about photography. The fair area has a lot of exhibitions. Those exhibitions are worth to see. The gear part was the topic of my previous blog post.

The ones I would pick f limited time are: German Youth Photography Award 2018, Faces X China Vol.2: My Way of Life, ProfiFoto New Talent Award – powered by Canon, Ray Collins – »The Elemental Force of the Ocean« and The Olympus Community – »Light & Shadow«.

Its always interesting to see what the young generation is doing. They will shape the future of photography. Ray Collins images of the Ocean looked very interesting in the introduction page. These images are exhibited at Ottoplatz, Train Station Deutz/Messe.

Of course I have to go and see what the Olympus community has made in their Light & Shadow exhibition.

Photoszene is a photo festival during Photokina. It has always been at the same time. Photoszene has 85 photo exhibitions, so there is a lot to see. No way its possible to see them all. They have listed all the exhibitions on their website. To be honest most of the photographers are unfamiliar to me. But there are three exhibitions that are a must see.

The first one is August Sanders photographs at Galerie Julian Sander. August Sanders “People of the 20thCentury” is a phenomenal project and now there are 24 photographs on display in Julian Sanders gallerie. Julian Sanders is August Sanders grandson.

The second one is also photographs by August Sander. A bigger collection if his great work “People of the 20thCentury”.

The third one is Doing the Document. On display are photos from, Diane Arbus, Karl Blossfeldt, Walker Evans, Lee Friedlander, August Sander and Garry Winogrand

Both are, as I said, must see exhibitions.

But then it gets difficult, what else to choose? I decided to pick them by looking the small photograph that Photoszene has on their website. These are the top 7 I picked. They are not in a particular order. I also have to check the location of each gallery and optimize the route so that I have the most time to see the images.

Peter Gowland’s Girls, #ISO-01 (Portraits with old style and old methods, collodium), Amerika – Einblicke, Fading Memories, #minnsche and Tod Papageorge: Dr. Blankman’s New York.

A lot see and most likely I will run out time.

What do you think of my picks? Any suggestions, did I miss something great? Please let me know in the comments.
