  • Hey Fuji Users! DxO Finally Gives Us Some Love in PureRAW 5

DxO has just launched a new version of its image enhancement software, PureRAW. It is now on version 5.

Dedicated Deep Prime for Fuji X-trans sensors!

XD, which comes from extra detail, was introduced in PureRAW 3. In PureRAW 5, DxO introduces its own XD for X-trans sensors, the XD3 X-trans Beta. Yes, it is still in beta and under development. It is good enough, though, for public beta, so no worries. There will be a possibility to give feedback to DxO.

This new version of image enhancement for X-trans sensors is a good move. Fuji cameras are popular but have not received the best treatment from DxO. I am glad this has changed.

    Local Adjustments are essential!

Local adjustments are significant in image editing. Different parts of the image need different types of treatment. Now, that can be done in DxO PureRAW, too. It is possible to sharpen only parts of the image. For example, it is possible to sharpen only the subject and leave the background as is. This improvement is much appreciated.

DxO PureRAW enhacments are based on Optics Modules.

The Optics Modules are what makes the DxO software the best when it comes to image enhancements. DxO now has over 100.000 camera lens combinations. That is vast, and your camera and lens combinations are most likely included.

DxO PureRAW 5 will be available in April.

The final product will be available on April 15th. It is worth the wait. I have tested the early beta version, and it looks very promising. Unfortunately, I cannot share any samples yet. As soon as I get the final version for testing, I will start to make some video content ready for April 15th. Most likely I will publish it on the 15th with samples and comments about the quality.

The Price of DXO PureRAW 5:

The price for DxO PureRAW 5 will be:

    New license: 119.99 € / $ – 109,99 £

    Upgrade from DxO PureRAW 3 or 4: 79.99 € / $ – 69,99 £

  • I am writing a book about Street Photography!

I’ve recently had some extra time, which prompted me to dive into a project I’ve been contemplating for quite a while. I’m excited to announce that I have started writing a book on street photography titled

“Street Photography: From Snapshots to Stories.“

    Cover of the Book

    Buy it already!

So far, I’ve completed the first five chapters, and you can find more details about the book in my latest video.

To make this journey more engaging, I’ve uploaded the initial five chapters as a PDF, which you can purchase on Gumroad for just €18 (plus taxes).

You might wonder why you would want to buy an unfinished book. The answer is straightforward: the purchase price includes access to the complete book in PDF format once it’s finished. As I complete additional chapters, I will add them to the PDF. However, please note that I will increase the price by a few euros once new chapters are uploaded. Now is a fantastic opportunity to grab it at just €18! The next update is expected in a couple of weeks.

The final product is a printed book.

Once I have finalized the book, it will also be available in print format. However, this printed version will not be included in the PDF deal, and the PDF will no longer be available once the printed book is ready.

For more information about my book and its progress, check out my latest video, blog posts, and Gumroad page.

I appreciate your support on this exciting journey into street photography!

  • A New Chapter for OM SYSTEM: The OM-3 Camera

OM SYSTEM launched its latest camera, the OM SYSTEM OM-3, today. I met with a representative from OM SYSTEM over coffee today and saw the OM-3 firsthand. I wanted to share my initial thoughts on this new release.

    OM SYSTEM Shifts Focus

OM SYSTEM has traditionally catered to wildlife, nature, and bird photographers. However, with the OM-3, they’re broadening their horizons to include urban photographers. While maintaining their philosophy of creating small yet powerful cameras, they’re now targeting a new audience – the urban explorer.

Many in the industry anticipated this move. OM SYSTEM’s original strategy of focusing on specific niches with tailored cameras has been a good idea, and the OM-3 represents a natural evolution of this approach.

    The OM-3: Urban Explorer’s Dream?

The OM-3, priced at around 2000€, enters a competitive market. Its retro design will appeal to many photographers who appreciate a classic look combined with modern technology. The look and feel clearly have the Olympus and the Maitani legacy.

We photographers are a peculiar bunch – we want cameras that look vintage but pack all the latest features!

The OM-3 will compete with cameras like the Fuji X-T5, Nikon Zf, and Z fc. It’s entering a crowded field.

Is it More Than Just a Repackaged OM-1 Mark II?

While the OM-3 shares many components with the OM-1 Mark II, it’s not only a rebranded version. The most intriguing addition is the Creative Dial on the front, reminiscent of the Pen-F model. This feature particularly interests street photographers, allowing easy access to film-like recipes or simulations.

Why did OM SYSTEM not simply create a Pen-F Mark II? A rangefinder-style camera could have further differentiated it from the OM-1 Mark II and tapped into the current popularity of that design. Most likely, the reason is that OM SYSTEM wants to continue the legacy of Olympus. Even though I would have preferred a range finder-style body, I understand the thinking behind this decision. As you see from the photos, it is very much like the Olympus M1 and OM-1.

    Urban Explorer’s Toolkit

Without hands-on testing, it’s challenging to assess the OM-3’s suitability for urban explorers definitively. However, the Creative Dial is likely to be a hit with street photographers. Unlike Fuji, OM SYSTEM can’t use specific film names for its simulations, but the concept is similar. Interestingly, these recipes are shareable, potentially creating custom market presets.

The OM-3 boasts a street-friendly design, weather sealing, and a metal body, making it robust enough for urban adventures. While its success remains to be seen, it certainly has potential in the urban photography market.

As always, the photographers will ultimately decide the future of the OM SYSTEM OM-3. I’m curious to see how it performs in real-world situations and how the street photography community receives it.

Two New lenses: 17mm F1.8 II and 25mm F1.8 II

Both of these lenses are good upgrades to the older versions. I have said for years that these lenses need an upgrade. They both fit the new OM-3 body well. I can imagine that the M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 II is well-suited for street photographers who like the standard lens. For those who want a wider field of view, the M.Zuiko 17mm F1.8 II is perfect.

    Will I test it?

Yes, I will. I was asked if I wanted to test it over the weekend, but as I still have a cast on my leg, I cannot really give it a good test. Not really able to do any street photography. I have agreed with OM SYSTEM that I test it in March. Most likely I will make some content about it on my YouTube channel.
