  • Farewell to Martin Parr, Poet of the Everyday

Martin Parr (1952–2025) was one of the defining documentary and street photographers of the last fifty years, and his passing on 6 December at his home in Bristol marks the end of a truly singular eye on everyday life. For those of us who work in the streets with a camera, his influence is so deeply woven into the visual language of contemporary photography that it can be hard to see where his work ends and ours begins.

    Life and work

Born in Epsom, Surrey, Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 1970s, before devoting decades to the rituals and absurdities of British life. From early black‑and‑white projects in rural communities to the highly saturated colour of series like The Last Resort, The Cost of Living, Small World and Common Sense, he developed a vocabulary that treated seaside holidays, supermarkets and social gatherings as sites of quiet drama and social critique.

His membership of Magnum Photos from 1994, presidency of the agency in the 2010s, and the publication of more than a hundred photobooks helped cement his reputation as one of the most widely recognised photographers of his generation. The founding of the Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol in 2014 extended that impact, creating a home for British and Irish photography and preserving his own archive alongside others’.

    Legacy for street photographers

Parr’s pictures showed that humour, excess, and kitsch could coexist with empathy, that “serious photographs disguised as entertainment” could still carry a sharp, critical edge. His embrace of bold colour, close-up flash and the chaos of public space opened doors for a generation of street photographers who saw in his work permission to look harder at the banal and the awkward, not just the heroic or the beautiful.

Even in later years, while living with cancer, he remained engaged with photography as a way of paying attention to ordinary moments, curating projects that underscored how fragile and precious daily life can be. As news of his death has spread, the tributes from photographers and institutions alike underline what many already felt: that Martin Parr changed not only how Britain looks in photographs, but how photographers everywhere think about the everyday.

  • Beers & Cameras pop-up Photowalk in Helsinki!

This is written in English and Finnish. Finnish text after English.

    Beers & Cameras logo

We are hosting a Beers & Cameras Meet-up in Helsinki on August 19, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at Teerenpeli bar in Kamppi.

    Why a Beers & Cameras Meet-up?

I had lunch with a photography enthusiast and a friend, Juha Auvinen, at the beginning of the summer. He came up with the idea of hosting a photography meet-up in Helsinki. I was all in since I used to host a monthly photography meeting in a pub back in the day. We met on the 8th of every month. Juha also mentioned Beers & Cameras. I contacted the founder and asked if it was possible to have a Beers & Cameras meet-up in Helsinki. So here are!

We chose the 19th, as August 19th is considered the birthday of photography.

Our goal, with Juha Auvinen, is to make this a regular monthly meet-up on the 19th of each month.

    What is Beers & Cameras?

Beers & Cameras is a photography meet-up and creative community that brings together photographers, videographers, and image-makers of all experience levels to connect over their shared passion for photography and good conversation. It was founded in San Diego by Juan Martinez and Pocholo Fransisco in late 2015. The group has expanded to multiple cities and is known for hosting regular gatherings at local breweries, coffee shops, and unique urban locations. These events are informal and social, offering a welcoming environment for networking, exchanging ideas, testing gear, and exploring creative perspectives. It does not matter whether you shoot film or digital.

The focus is on building a supportive community, fostering collaboration, and making new friends, with the beer or any other drink serving as an ice-breaker rather than the main event. Beers & Cameras is open to everyone interested in image-making, from hobbyists to professionals, and is designed to be a “third space” for adults to step away from their screens and meet fellow creatives in real life. You can find more information about Beers & Cameras on their website. There is also a good blog post on the Cooph website about Beers & Cameras.

First meeting on the 19th of August!

We will host the first meeting at Teerenpeli, a local pub in Kamppi, on August 19th. It is the birthday of photography. We will start at 6 pm. Juha and I will have a few words, and then we will take a photo walk around Kamppi. After about an hour of photo walking, we will meet again at Teerenpeli and discuss cameras and photography. We will set up a service that allows you to upload images for sharing.

    Who is it for?

Our meet-up is for everyone, regardless of the camera you use or your level. If you enjoy photography, you are welcome. We will be a multilingual group. Our languages will be English and Finnish. Of course, photography is a language in itself, and you are welcome if you do not know the language. We will find our way to communicate.

    Please give us a heads-up!

You can come to Teerenpeli without notice, but it would be nice to get a heads-up so Juha and I have an idea of how many we’re expecting. Please drop a short email to me at peter@peterforsgard.com or Juha Auvinen, and let us know that you are coming.

I hope to see you in Teerenpeli on the 19th of August, 2025!!

Järjestämme Beers & Cameras -tapaamisen Helsingissä 19. elokuuta 2025 klo 18:00. Tapaaminen pidetään Teerenpeli baarissa Kampissa.

    Miksi Beers & Cameras -tapaaminen?

    Mikä on Beers & Cameras?

Aloitamme klo 18.

Kenelle Beers & Cameras on tarkoitettu?
